Open any move-out inspection and the oven is near the top. It’s an enclosed box that shows years of use at a glance: burnt-on spills on the floor, greasy racks, a glass door you can’t see through. Unlike a countertop, it can’t be faked with a quick wipe.

How to clean an oven for move-out, step by step

Give yourself a few hours and some ventilation. Baked-on grease takes time to break down — there’s no instant fix.

1. Take the racks out. Soak them separately (more on that below). An empty oven is far easier to reach into.
2. Scrape loose debris. Lift out burnt crumbs and flakes with a plastic scraper so you’re not smearing them around.
3. Make a baking soda paste. Mix baking soda with a little water into a spreadable paste. Coat the interior — floor, walls, and roof — avoiding the heating elements and fan.
4. Let it sit. Give it several hours, ideally overnight. This is where the real work happens; the paste loosens grease so you’re wiping, not scrubbing.
5. Wipe it out. Use a damp cloth to remove the paste and grime. A spray of vinegar helps lift any stubborn residue and cuts the last of the baking soda.
6. Repeat the worst spots. Heavy carbon around the back and floor usually needs a second round. Don’t force it — reapply and wait.

The racks and the glass door

These two are what a landlord actually notices.

• Racks: soak them in a bathtub (lay down a towel first to protect the tub) with hot water and dish soap, or baking soda and vinegar, for a few hours. Then scrub with a stiff brush. Rinse and dry before they go back in.
• Glass door: a clear door reads as “clean” instantly. Spread baking soda paste between the glass panels’ reachable surface, let it sit, then wipe. The difference is the first thing an inspector sees.
